Radio and Ebola

The deadly Ebola virus has claimed over 3,000 lives in West Africa. People living in many of these remote areas live in constant fear and isolation. ELWA is a mission in Liberia with a hospital and school that relies on our radio transmitter to broadcast life-saving healthcare information in a short period of time without exposing them to the Ebola virus.

People in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea needed the frequent updates from ELWA but the station went silent when the transmitter developed problems in August.

It was then sent back to Elkhart for repair. On its return to Liberia, it took six more hours and special assistance from the Liberian Minister of Health to clear it through Customs duty-free and back to the ELWA station, where it is once again in operation. Praise God!

Technology for abundant life!

Big news, everyone! The HCJB Global Technology Center is now SonSet Solutions.
After 28 years of effective worldwide ministry under the names of HCJB Global Technology Center and HCJB World Radio Engineering Center, our team of missions-minded technologists is becoming SonSet Solutions, an independent ministry to help spread the gospel through technology.

Please see our new website: www.sonsetsolutions.org for more info (many answers will be found if you click on the hyperlink "find out why" on the homepage).  Yes, this is the website that many of us have been working on.

Please pray with us all as we transition. We appreciate you all so much!

Being Asian is indeed a bond!

Dear Prayer Warriors,
Through various circumstances and connections (friend of a friend of a friend type thing) that only God can work out, Jean was invited to speak about how it has been growing up as a child of Chinese parents, who emigrated from China. These ladies have children born here in the U.S.

The conversation took a turn, and Jean was able to share the gospel with these ladies last Tuesday.  With the exception of the professor, the ladies have all immigrated to US within the last 10 years and reside in Fort Wayne. Not all of these ladies know the Lord, so please join us in prayer for them to respond to the gospel.

The ladies' names (some have chosen to use "American" names) are:
Back row: (L-R) Alice (missionary retiree), Mary (leader), Mary (Chinese professor), Lilly, Wei, Lucy, Charlene
Front row: Lynn, Ying, Minnie, Barb, Jean, and Boo Ling

What do we actually do?

Dear blog readers:

We wish to keep you up-to-date on all we do at the Center.  Here is a bit of what we each do.

John:
  • As Senior Developer, writes software for SonSet® solar-powered radios, inventory & manufacturing, financial and shipping.
  • As I.T. staff, helps with computer-related needs for missionaries, and maintenance of mission computers and networks.
  • As chaplain, teaches Bible studies, and leads & coordinating prayer services.
  • Mentors our interns and apprentices.

Jean:
  • Works in IT as the assistant to the IT manager.  This job is less glamorous than it sounds. She basically sorts files and is currently helping develop our organization's website.
  • Organizes monthly luncheons for the ladies.
  • Fills in at the front desk occasionally.
  • Together with John, hosts any interns, apprentices, and volunteers that have a need. The house is almost always full.

Special prayer request:
John, Jean, and Anina will be traveling to Haiti end of November.  Please pray as we prepare possible special projects that may include setting up a computer lab, good health checks, cooking classes, and even construction.  Please pray for us to be able to share the gospel directly to some one when we go! If you are able to give toward this one-time trip, you can do so directly into our regular account.  Thank you so very much!
